New Delhi: India’s women’s hockey team defeated world No. 2 Argentina in the first game of the 2021/22 FIH Hockey Pro League in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Saturday. After regulation time between the two teams ended at 3-3, the Indian team beat Argentina 2-1 in a shootout with goals from Neha and Sonika.

Lalremsiami scored one goal and Gurjit Kaur scored two goals. Agustina Gorgeleni scored a hat-trick for Argentina. The Indian team scored in the first minutes of the first quarter thanks to a brilliant pass from Vandana Katariya. Moments later, the Indian women’s hockey team were awarded a penalty corner. However, the Argentine defense saved the goal. The Indian players continued to put pressure on their opponents and Lalremsiami scored in the fourth minute to put India ahead.

The Argentinian team tried to come back in the 6th minute after scoring one penalty corner after another, but the Indian players did not allow the opponents to score. The remainder of the first quarter saw a one-on-one game between India and Argentina. India entered a circle in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Penalty corner obtained in the 30th minute

However, the Argentine team got another penalty corner soon after and Agustina Gorzelny didn’t miss the equalizer in the 22nd minute. Neha scored a brilliant run in the 30th minute to earn a penalty corner but the Indians couldn’t take advantage of the chance.

Salima Tete fired a shot in the opening minutes of the second half, but she couldn’t put the ball in the net. Moments later, the Argentinian team entered a circle and were awarded a penalty stroke. Gorzeleni made his mark and helped Argentina take a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute.

Gurjit Kaur equalized the score

The Indian team bounced back quickly and earned a penalty corner. Gurjeet Kaur put the ball in the goal and leveled the score at 2-2. Argentina earned one penalty corner after another in the 41st minute, but the Indian defense unit held off their opponents.

However, in the last minute of the third quarter, Agustina Gorzelny converted a penalty corner to give Argentina a 3-2 lead. Lalremsiami and Salima Tete were in excellent position to equalize in the 48th minute, but they couldn’t find a way to kick the ball into the goal.

The Indians continued to pressure their opponents. Gurjit Kaur scored a 51st-minute penalty corner to help India level the score at 3-3. After that, the game between the two teams ended 3-3. The Indian women’s hockey team will next face the United States of America in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on June 21-22.
