IPL media rights auction: ‘Star’ on TV and ‘Viacom 18’ on digital will broadcast matches, 44,000 crore deal

The bidding process is underway for the rights to broadcast 410 matches over the next five IPL seasons. The second day auction is over and bidding continues for the third and fourth group media rights.

This time, BCCI decided to sell the media rights in four groups. There are a total of 98 matches in the third package and so far 18.5 crores have been offered for one match. Bidding for the third and fourth groups will begin Tuesday at 11 a.m.

According to the PTI press agency, the call for tenders for the first two groups has been completed. So far, the process of auctioning TV and digital rights in India has been completed. The rights to these two categories were sold for Rs 44,075 crore.

The first group concerned television media rights in India. According to PTI, ‘Star’ has made an offer for Rs 23,575 crore. At the same time, the second group belonged to the broadcasting rights of IPL on the OTT platform. According to news agency PTI, Reliance company “Viacom 18” has bid for Rs 20,500 crore for it. That is to say, different broadcasters have obtained the television and digital broadcasting rights.

The channel showing IPL matches on TV will donate Rs 57.5 crore to BCCI for each match. Meanwhile, the company broadcasting the IPL matches on the digital platform will donate Rs 50 crore to BCCI for each match.

As a result, the cost of an IPL match was Rs 107.5 crores. Companies (TV and digital) broadcasting matches in India from 2023 to 2027 will donate a total of Rs 44,075 crore to BCCI. The cost of media rights was multiplied by two and a half compared to 2017.

The cost of an IPL match has exceeded that of EPL
The media rights auction for IPL 2023-2027 is not over yet, but an IPL match cost more than EPL. The cost of an EPL match is around Rs 86 crores, but the cost of an IPL match has exceeded Rs 105 crores.

Now, only the NFL (American Football League) is ahead of the IPL in terms of single-game winnings. The cost of an NFL game is Rs 109 crore. Once the IPL media rights auction is over, an IPL match could cost more than all other leagues. By the time the bidding process stalled until 6 p.m. Monday, the total amount crossed Rs 46,000 crore.

The number of matches can be 94 in a season

Companies that buy media rights can get 74 to 74 games in three seasons from 2023 to 2025. The number of games could reach 94 in 2026 and 2027. Media rights are sold this year in four different packages. Package-A has TV rights for India and Package-B has digital rights for India. Package-C includes a selection of 18 matches and Package-D includes television and digital rights abroad.

Star had rights until 2022
Star India had in September 2017 bought the media rights for the period 2017 to 2022 at an offer of Rs 16,347.50 crore. It beat Sony Pictures. After this deal, the cost of an IPL match was Rs 54.5 crore. In 2008, Sony Pictures Networks won the media rights for 10 years with an offer of Rs 8,200 crore.
